Asuncion, 13 July, 2016.- A side event called "Social Inclusion and Health in All Policies" will be held this Wednesday within the Third Meeting of Minister and High Authorities of Social Development. The side event has been organized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Task Force on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs).
The panel, scheduled from 13.00 to 14.30 pm (Asuncion time), includes as panelists Mr. Hector Cardenas, Minister of Social Action of Paraguay; Dr. Antonio Barrios, Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare of Paraguay; Mr. Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States; Dr. Francisco Becerra, Assistant Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); and Dr. Anselm Hennis, director of the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health of PAHO/WHO. It will be moderated by the PAHO/WHO Representative in Paraguay, Dr. Carlos Castillo Solorzano.
NCDs, such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and chronic respiratory diseases, are causing 80% of deaths in the Region of the Americas: about 4.8 million people die each year from NCDs. NCDs are preventable by addressing the key modifiable risk factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and the harmful use of alcohol. Reducing the risk factors requires the intervention from all sector of society and goverment.
