The opening of RIMSA 17 was attended by the highest authorities of Paraguay, led by its president and representatives of all branches of government. From left to right: Carlos Castillo, PAHO representative in Paraguay; Juan Carlos Baruja, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Paraguay; Hugo Velazquez Moreno, President of the Chamber of Deputies; Juan Afara, Vice President; Horacio Cartes Jara, President of the Republic of Paraguay; Alicia Pucheta, President of the Supreme Court; Carissa F. Etienne, PAHO Director; Antonio Barrios, Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare; and Claudio Ternicier Deputy Minister of Agriculture Chile.

CONTEXT:

RIMSA is the most important forum in the Americas for defining veterinary public health policies. Under the theme "One Health and Sustainable Development Goals," ministers will analyze veterinary public health issues in the fields of food safety, the eradication of foot-and-mouth disease in the Americas and the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases. They will also discuss strengthening work on issues related to the animal-human health interface, which are essential to the mitigation and containment of the impact of antimicrobial resistance. The One Health approach, as the governance of the intersectoral, interprogrammatic and inter-disciplinary efforts, aims to promote and protect the health status of people, animals and the environment by cooperating on complex problems.

NOTE:

Two technical events will serve as preparation for the ministerial summit: the 13th Meeting of the Hemispheric Committee for the Eradication of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (COHEFA13, on 19 July) and the Seventh Meeting of the Pan-American Commission on Food Safety (COPAIA 7, on 20 July). All events will take place in Asuncion, Paraguay.
