Epidemiological Alerts and Updates


The Epidemiological Alerts are released in order to provide information about the occurrence of international public health events which have implications or could have implications for the countries and territories of the Americas; as well as recommendations issued by the Pan American Health Organization.

The Epidemiological Updates are released as new information becomes available regarding events previously shared through Epidemiological Alerts.

The Epidemiological Alerts and Updates are primarily of events caused by infectious agents, although they may also be of events concerning contaminated goods, food safety, or of chemical or radionuclear origin, per the provisions of the International Health Regulations (IHR (2005)).

These releases complement the WHO Diseases Outbreak News, which refer to worldwide events of public health.

3 March 2020: Diphtheria - Epidemiological Update

28 February 2020: Measles - Epidemiological Update

Between 1 January and 22 February 2020, 6 countries have reported confirmed cases in the Region of the Americas: Argentina (45 cases, including 1 death), Brazil (338 cases, including 1 death), Canada (1 case), Chile (2 cases), the United States of America (5 cases), and Uruguay (2 cases). 28 February 2020: Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) - Epidemiological Update

Since the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) epidemiological update on novel coronavirus published on 14 February 2020 – and as of 28 February 2020, an additional 34,562 cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide including 1,475 additional deaths. 14 February 2020: Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) - Epidemiological Update

On 31 December 2019, Wuhan Municipality in Hubei Province, China reported a cluster of pneumonia cases with unknown etiology. By the 9th of January 2020, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention identified a novel coronavirus COVID-19 as the causative agent of this outbreak. On 30 January 2020, with more than 9,700 confirmed cases in China and 106 confirmed cases in 19 other countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director General declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), accepting the advices of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee. On 11 February, following the World Health Organization (WHO) best practices for naming of new human infectious diseases, WHO has named the disease, COVID-19, short for “coronavirus disease 2019.” View Document / Ver Documento
