The ACHR is part of the system of advisory committees of the World Health Organization (WHO) and its Secretariat lies within the Health Systems and Strengthening Project of the technical area of Health Systems based on Primary Health Care (HSS).

The committee is currently composed of eleven renowned experts from different backgrounds and disciplines who have an in-depth knowledge of the status of health research in the Americas and of the challenges it faces. Members of the ACHR frequently participate in virtual debates and attend yearly meetings called by the PAHO Director. Current members are denoted with an asterisk.

Established in 1962, the ACHR guides the PAHO Director in health research policy and programs, and contributes significantly towards the formulation of research for health policies and strategies within PAHO and towards strategic planning for technical cooperation in research for health.

This thematic issue explores how this research can drive effective and efficient health systems across the Americas, and offers insights and perspectives on developments and challenges following the implementation of these policies. This series of articles was proposed by PAHO/WHO and commissioned by The BMJ. Manuscripts were originally published in English in the BMJ and were translated into Spanish and Portuguese by PAHO. All articles were independently peer reviewed and edited by The BMJ who had sole responsibility for the decision to publish the articles with no involvement from PAHO/WHO.

Former ACHR Reports

WHO Advisory Committee on Health Research.

The ACHR is an advisory body with a role to provide the Director-General with scientific advice in relation to WHO's research programmes.  It has the consultative mandate to support the World Health Organization in carrying out its constitutional role of promoting and coordinating research relating to international health work, acting in close cooperation with external institutions pursuing common goals and with the scientific community at large.
