EquiLAC II: Phase I
EquiLAC II comprises a series of studies to measure and explain health systems inequalities in countries of the Americas. As such, EquiLAC II aims to update and further expand on the concepts and methods of previous studies during the late 1990s, while introducing new methodologies and advancements in health equity analysis. Phase I studies will include an assessment of the sources of health care systems inequalities, the direction of inequality in selected health systems, as well as within country and cross-country comparisons. Each study will identify whether there is systematic variation in the use of health care services in relation to some variation of living standards.
These studies seek to assess inequities of health systems in terms of health needs and health care utilization, using concentration curves and indexes to measure the extent of inequalities in income groups. Large-scale national surveys are used as data sources. Countries that participated in EquiLAC I and those with two or more years of data availability will be able to study the direction of inequalities over time, in addition to the measurement and explanation of health care inequalities. In 2010, there were six country studies in progress (Brazil, Canada, Chile, Jamaica, Mexico, and Peru) with the remaining three countries (Colombia, Ecuador, and the United States) to be added.
The nine studies will serve as the basis of a report to measure and explain health care inequalities and inequities in the Americas, and to see if countries' health systems and policies have evolved to deliver health services equitably, effectively, and efficiently.
