• Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the Americas, responsible for 1.3 million deaths and 3.7 new cases (21% of the cases globally) in 2018.
  • The number of cancer cases is projected to increase 32%, to more than 5 million million cases by 2030, due to the aging of the population and the epidemiological transition in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • About 40% of all cancer cases could be prevented by reducing key risk factors. These include tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.
  • Vaccination and screening programmes are effective interventions to prevent cancers ameneable to primary and secondary prevention.
  • About 30% of cancers can be cured if detected early and treated adequately. All cancer patients can benefit from palliative care.
