Health in All Policies (HiAP) is an approach to public policy that systematically takes into account the health implications of decisions, seeks synergies, and avoids harmful health impacts in order to improve population health and health equity. Many of the social, environmental, and economic determinants of health have origins that extend beyond the health sector and health policies.  Therefore, it is important that the impact on health be considered across sectors and at all levels of governance.

The HiAP approach focuses on legitimacy, accountability, transparency, access to information, participation, sustainability, and multi-sectoral collaboration.  Support for HiAP is provided by intergovernmental organizations and structures, with the health sector serving a central role in promoting HiAP.
