Costa Rica - Regional workshop on suicide prevention
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica, organized a regional workshop on suicide prevention in San José, 11-12 May. The main objective pursued was to strengthen the capacity of countries for implementing preventive measures related to suicidal behaviors in the Region of the Americas through the development of national prevention plans and the improvement of surveillance systems.

Ecuador - Psychological first aid workshops in Manabi
Staff from the ministries of health, of economic and social inclusion, and of education, as well as members of the armed forces, police, firefighters and volunteers from civil society organizations and universities participated in the workshops on psychological first aid that took place in Portoviejo, Pedernales, Bahía de Caráquez, Chone and Manta.

Peru - Documentary on a community mental health care experience
Lima, 19 May 2016.- Persons with psychosocial disabilities from the CREMI (Iquitos's definitely closed Rehabilitation Center for the Mentally Ill) are today receiving care in sheltered homes, in permanent contact with the community and integrated into their environment. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) has produced a documentary titled "An Innovative Approach to Mental Health" showing this experience.

Mental Health Atlas of the Americas – December 2015
The WHO Mental Health Atlas was first produced as the Atlas of Mental Health Resources in the World 2001 (WHO, 2001). Since then, subsequent updates have been published (WHO, 2005; WHO, 2011). The Mental Health Atlas provides up-to-date information on the availability of mental health services and resources across the world as well as baseline data towards meeting the established targets of the Comprehensive mental health action plan 2013-2020.

mhGAP Humanitarian Intervention Guide
People with mental health disorders rarely have access to specialized health workers trained in assessing and managing their conditions. WHO and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have therefore jointly produced the mhGAP Humanitarian Intervention Guide (mhGAP-HIG), so non-specialist health workers can better identify, assess and manage mental health needs.

Thinking Healthy: A manual for psychosocial management of perinatal depression
WHO has developed a generic field-test version of this manual for training community health workers on how to support mothers with depression, through evidence based cognitive behavioral techniques recommended by the mhGAP programme.

The Lancet today's issue: "Time for mental health to come out of the shadows”
Mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, impose an enormous global disease burden that leads to premature mortality and affects functioning and quality of life. If left untreated, mental disorders can result in worse treatment adherence and outcomes for commonly co-occurring diseases, such as tuberculosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Yet parity between mental and physical health conditions remains a distant ideal. Poor mental health also impacts on economic development through lost production and consumption opportunities at both the individual and societal level.
