“Depression: let’s talk” says WHO, as depression tops list of causes of ill health
Geneva/Washington D.C., World Health Day 2017 (WHO/PAHO). - Depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. According to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015. Lack of support for people with mental disorders, coupled with a fear of stigma, prevent many from accessing the treatment they need to live healthy, productive lives.

Peru – PAHO Director called for strengthening the community mental health system
Lima, March 16 – At the inauguration of the Community Mental Health Center, Santa Rosa de Manchay, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization, Carissa F. Etienne, urged the countries of the Americas to reduce the role of psychiatric hospitals and direct more human and financial resources towards strengthening primary care interventions. PAHO Director inaugurated the center along with the Nation´s First Lady, Nancy Lange, and the Minister of Health, Patricia García Funegra, among other authorities.

PAHO Headquarters in Washington D.C. - Briefing on implementation of a regional plan of action on dementia in older persons
In April, representatives of Alzheimer associations from twelve countries attended a briefing on the implementation of a regional plan of action on dementia in older persons held at PAHO Headquarters in Washington D.C. Dr. Dévora Kestel, PAHO/WHO Mental Health and Substance Use Unit Chief, led a debate on national and regional collaboration.

Dominican Republic - Spiritual leaders receive training on depression care
Within the framework of the third phase of the Mental Health Project promoted by the Dominican Adventist University (UNAD, for its acronym in Spanish), more than 300 spiritual leaders participated in the workshop on "Depression and its management in the community", held in Santo Domingo, March 23rd.

PAHO trained more than 100 journalists from the Americas on responsible coverage of suicide to prevent ‘suicide contagion’
Washington, D.C., April 6 - From Marilyn Monroe to Robin Williams, media sensationalizing of suicide is often repeated. Newspapers, radio and television often portray cases of adolescent suicide as heroic acts of love, comparable to Romeo and Juliet, the tragic work by William Shakespeare. This type of coverage can generate a contagious effect, according to studies carried out in various countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified media coverage of suicide as a strategic area that can help prevent it.

South America - Dialogue on Mental Health
"Dialogue on Mental Health" consists of a series of teleconferences addressed to focal points at the ministries of health and to mental health consultants of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). This program will be held every two months through the webinar of PAHO’s mental health subregional coordination. The first session took place on February 23.

Washington, D.C., April 18.- Countries can improve public health by regulating the marketing of alcoholic beverages to reduce its consumption and related harms, and the Pan American Health Organization has developed new principles for countries to consider in developing these regulations.
