Saint Kitts and Nevis - Drug demand reduction strategy reviewed at CARICOM subregional meeting
With the purpose of revising the subregional drug demand reduction strategy, directors of the national drug councils of Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Dominica, Guyana, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago gathered at a meeting organized by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, 18 February. The subregional integration organization was represented by Mrs. Beverly Reynolds, Coordinator of Health and Human Development, and Ms. Tessa Chaderton-Shaw, drug policy consultant.

Trinidad and Tobago - Improving the management of epilepsy and its comorbidities in the Caribbean
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in partnership with the Epilepsy Society of the Caribbean (ESC), the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), organized a regional workshop (28 February – 1 March) to strengthen country capacity to deliver evidence based care to people with epilepsy within the framework of PAHO Strategy and Plan of Action on Epilepsy.

PAHO and OAS renew agreement to cooperate on a public health response to the drug problem in the Americas
On 5 February, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Organization of American States (OAS) renewed a memorandum of understanding to work together in the improvement of countries’ capacities to respond to the needs of people affected by the drug problem with a public health perspective.

Panama – New mhGAP-IG train the trainers workshop
PAHO/WHO hosted in Panama City, 13-15 March, a three-day training of trainers and supervisors workshop on the new version 2.0 of the mhGAP Intervention Guide for mental, neurological and substance use disorders (mhGAP-IG), which was launched in 2017. The objectives pursued included familiarizing participants with the new version of the Guide and its training manuals, so that they can confidently utilize the different teaching resources and skills required.

Colombia – Video on the care of severe mental health disorders in Cauca
This video gathers testimonies of users as well as interviews with different actors that participated in the "Care of severe mental health disorders in El Tambo, Cauca" project. It was developed by PAHO/WHO Colombia, December 2017, to give visibility to the results of this care and rehabilitation model and to accompany the document that systematizes the project since its origin in 2013.

Webinar: "Alcohol and Road injuries in the Americas"
There is ample evidence showing that the harmful use of alcohol is associated with deaths and disability caused by road injuries. The Region of the Americas is of particular interest in relation with alcohol related road injuries as data support policy actions in this area but countries have been slow in implementing them.

The “International Diploma of Mental Health in Deinstitutionalization: principles and practices for community inclusion” was developed by the University of Business and Social Sciences (UCES) in Argentina, through its Faculty of Psychology and Social Sciences and UCES Virtual Academic Unit. It is directed by doctors Hugo Cohen and Graciela Natella, and coordinated by Ms. María Silvina Sosa.

INEBRIA Conference 2018
The 2018 INEBRIA Conference will be held in Santiago, Chile, 27-28 September and will be hosted by the Chilean Ministry of Health, the Chilean Nacional Service for Prevention and Rehabilitation on Drugs and Alcohol Consumption and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

New PLASMA workshop
The Platform for Social Research on Mental Health in Latin America - PLASMA - is organizing its second international workshop entitled Cartographies of Suffering and Mental Health in Latin America. A Century of the ‘Social Question.’ The event will be held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on the 5 and 6 of October 2018.
