Breastfeeding and complementary feeding

Breastfeeding is the optimal way of feeding babies, offering them the nutrients they need in the right balance, as well as offering protection against disease. Research shows that breastfeeding confers a range of benefits in the short and long term which have a profound impact on health, nutrition and development. Breastfeeding also has benefits for the family, the health system and society, since it is more economical than artificial feeding, and health care costs are lower because of the highly protective effects of breastfeeding. The World Health Assembly (WHA), in 2012, approved the global nutrition target of increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of age to at least 50% by 2025.
