|PAHO/WHO Representative Visits Grand Turk|
Dr. Gerry Eijkemans, PAHO/WHO Representative to The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands, accompanied by Dr. Victor Zamora, PAHO/WHO Health Systems and Services Advisor, visited Grand Turk (TCI) during the period, January 31st through February 1st, 2013.

The agenda afforded an opportunity to meet with the newly elected authorities: Hon. Dr. Rufus Ewing (former Chief Medical Officer), Premier; Hon. Mrs Amanda Anisha Missick, Minister of Health and Education (MoHE); and Mrs. Desiree Lewis ratified Permanent Secretary of the MoHE.

The visit permitted not only to present the advances made in the implementation of the PAHO/WHO Biennial Work Plan (2012-2013) for the country, but also to adjust it taking into consideration the priorities of the new government in the area of health.
Reinforcing the governance and studying alternatives for increasing the overall sustainability and affordability of the health system, strengthening primary health care services, advancing the compliance with the International Health Regulations and tobacco legislation as well as increase environmental health capacities were the key areas explored during the visit.

Dr. Nadia Astwood, Director of Health Services and Chief Medical Officer (a.i); Mr. Kenrick Neely, Director of Environmental Health; Mrs. Portia Clark, Deputy Permanent Secretary; Dr Jamillah Berry, Director of Health Planning; Dr. Therese Maitland, Director of Surveillance and Research; Mrs. Jackurlyn Sutton, Chief Nursing Officer and EPI Director; Mrs. Aldora Robinson, HIV/Aids Programme Coordinator and Mrs. Angela Campbell Fraser, Public Health Nurse, were also present during the various meetings.

A special meeting to celebrate and attend the Inauguration Day of the New Director of The Pan American Health Organization was organized in the Turks and Caicos House of Assembly and Office of the Premier. The meeting was chaired by the Premier, Hon. Dr. Rufus Ewing and was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Health and Education.
