A report from the PWR-Guyana highlights the following activities taking place in the country to benefit the victims of Haiti’s earthquake:
- The President of Guyana has pledged US$1 million.
- Guyanese musicians held a mega-concert and raised considerable funds.
- The Red Cross is in the process of an appeal fund to which PAHO/WHO-Guyana staff have generously contributed.
- Calls from the Government, private sector, civil society groups, churches, schools, and the community at large for donations generated enormous response. Several containers containing rice, water, clothing, and other needed nonperishable items were shipped to Port-au-Prince as an expression of Guyana’s solidarity with the Haitian population. “Everyone, it seems, has been moved to contribute something,” noted PWR Dr. Kathleen Israel.
