This year, the World No Tobacco Day calls to fight against the interference of the tobacco industry in the design and implementation of public health policies that aim to control the tobacco epidemic. Smoking cigarettes is a major cause of preventable death, killing nearly six million people each year, including 600,000 non-smokers exposed to the tobacco smoke of others. The Pan American Health Organization urges countries in the Americas region to intensify their efforts against the interference of the tobacco industry.
