This approach aims to make malaria interventions more targeted and reach the communities and people most likely to become infected.

The number of malaria cases in the Region of the Americas declined by 62% (1,181,095 to 451,242 cases) between 2000 and 2015 (figure1). In the same period malaria-related deaths has declined by 61.2% (410 in 2000 to 159 deaths in 2015).

This report from the Communicable Disease-Malaria Program, Area of Health Surveillance and Disease Prevention and Control, Pan American Health Organization is an epidemiological analysis of the situation of malaria in the Americas in 2008.

 Following the trend since 2010, malaria continued to decline in 2013 after increasing between 2008 and 2010. On comparison with the previous year, there was a decrease of 9% in 2013, more than that of 5% in 2012.

The last decade shows an overall downward trend of malaria morbidity and mortality rates in the Region of the Americas (Fig. 1). There were approximately 7,500 fewer confirmed cases of malaria between 2007 and 2017. Excluding Venezuela, in the same period, malaria-related deaths also decreased by almost half from 170 in 2007 to 88 in 2017 (Fig. 1)

The World Malaria Report is WHO’s flagship malaria publication, released each year in December. It assesses global and regional malaria trends, highlights progress towards global targets, and describes opportunities and challenges in controlling and eliminating the disease. Most of the data presented in this report is for 2015.
