This dashboard shows the HBsAg prevalence estimates at global, regional and country level and how they have changed since hepatitis B vaccination was introduced.

This past May 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) Member States endorsed the first “Global Health Sector Strategy on Viral Hepatitis 2016-2021” at the 69th World Health Assembly. This strategy will contribute to the achievement of the Health Goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  

Epidemiological estimates for viral hepatitis in the Western Pacific 

In 2016, PAHO published Hepatitis B and C in the Spotlight: A public health response in the Americas, the first regional report on viral hepatitis. It provides an overview of the epidemiology of hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) in the Americas, and the national responses implemented by countries and territories in the Region. 

This document follows up the publication “Supply of Blood for Transfusion in Latin American and Caribbean Countries 2012 and 2013” and presents indicators on the availability, safety, and use of blood and blood components, as well as the organization of national blood systems.

In September 2005, the 46th Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) approved the Regional Plan of Action for Transfusion Safety 2006-2010, whose purpose is to contribute to the reduction of mortality and to the improvement of patient care in Latin America and the Caribbean by making safe blood for transfusion available in a timely manner for all patients who need it.
