This publication aims to disseminate knowledge and serve as a tool for health professionals who work directly with these diseases, assisting national leishmaniasis control programs in strengthening therapeutic alternatives by improving the standardization, organization, and accessibility of health services for those affected by leishmaniases in the Americas.

Leishmaniases— zoonotic and vector-borne diseases —are a public health problem in the Americas. Their complex biological cycle includes different species of parasites, as well as reservoirs and vectors, that cause a set of clinical syndromes in infected humans that can compromise the skin, mucous membranes, and viscera. In the specific case of the Americas, there is a large number of leishmaniases cases, and they are broadly distributed

The guide is intended for use by front-line health workers without specialist knowledge of skin diseases. Pathways for more detailed investigation and/or management are described but, often, this will involve referral to a specialist service.
