Lors de la 28e Conférence sanitaire panaméricaine, 64e session du Comité régional de l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé pour les Amériques, tenue du 17 au 21 septembre 2012 à Washington, D.C., les États Membres ont approuvé la Stratégie et le Plan d’action pour la santé intégrale chez l'enfant. La Stratégie et le Plan sont un effort continu qui a pour objet de soutenir et d'élargir le concept d'intervention intégrée dans les systèmes et services de santé ainsi qu'aux niveaux familial et communautaire dans la Région.

On estime que dans la Région des Amériques plus de 20 000 mères meurent pendant la grossesse et l’accouchement et plus de 200 000 nouveau-nés meurent dans les 28 jours qui suivent la naissance. La majorité de ces décès se produisent dans la première semaine de vie, dans des zones rurales ayant un accès limité aux services de santé, et au sein des populations autochtones. Parmi les décès néonataux, 85 % sont liés à une insuffisance de poids à la naissance et la prématurité, ainsi qu’à des causes évitables telles que l’asphyxie périnatale et les infections.

At the 28th Pan American Sanitary Conference, 64th Session of the Regional Committee of the World Health Organization for the Americas, held 17-21 September 2012 in Washington D.C., Member States approved the Strategy and Plan of Action for Integrated Child Health. The Strategy and Plan are an ongoing effort to support and expand the concept of integration of actions within health systems and services, and at the family and community levels in the Region.

This innovative Strategy and Plan of Action will promote a new approach to increase coverage and scale up actions in priority and high-impact countries using a multisectoral approach. This work will require that focused attention be paid to the crosscutting areas of socioeconomic equity, equity of access to health care with a focus on primary health care, gender, and cultural diversity. It must also take into consideration the provisions of the Convention of the Rights of the Child and other international human rights instruments applicable to the health of women and children. It will also strengthen social protection interventions throughout the life-course and increase access to a qualified cadre of human resources.
