This English version incorporates suggestions and recommendations made by the participants at the Trinidad meeting to ensure its cultural relevance for the Caribbean and the Anglophone readers in general.

This document reflects recommendations emerging from an expert “Regional Consultation on Health Promotion and the Provision of Care to Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This global report is based on 59 countries that reported data from more than 12 000 clinics from cohorts of patients receiving ART between 2004 and 2014. The report includes the most recent clinic-level data reported to WHO in 2015 –2016 and reflects a lag due to the 12 month cohort reporting period.

This second HIVDR report provides an update on recent population levels of HIVDR covering the period 2014–2016. The report includes data from 16 nationally representative surveys from 14 countries estimating resistance in: adults initiating ART (PDR), children younger than 18 months newly diagnosed with HIV, and adults on ART (acquired HIV drug resistance or ADR).

WHO is accountable for reporting back to the World Health Assembly on progress in implementing the Global health sector strategies on HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections based on data received from countries. This report assesses the mid-term progress in 2019 in implementing these global health sector strategies from 2016 to 2021.

An increasing number of countries are adopting policies endorsing PrEP for HIV prevention. Emerging evidence from clinical research that different dosing strategies can be effective provides an opportunity to offer flexibility, choice and convenience to individuals who can benefit from PrEP and is considered by WHO in updating its guidance to countries.

In the current context of treatment being rapidly scaled up, prolonged exposure to ARV drugs and transition to new antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, ARV toxicity clearly needs to be monitored to better understand the risks of ARV drugs under the conditions of actual use.
