Adolescent Health Training in Belize

Adolescent Health Training

Overview:

Even though 22% of Belize’s population is between 10 and 19 years (Statistical Institute of Belize 2022. Postcensal Estimates by Age and Sex 2020-2022), consultations have shown that adolescents are concerned about discrimination at health facilities and that service providers fail to understand the issues affecting adolescents. The Belize Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) is playing a leadership role in expanding the provision of health services to adolescents. Recognizing that healthcare providers have limited capacity to effectively and sensitively manage adolescent clients, the MoHW is collaborating with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to expand the coverage and improve the quality of health services for adolescents.

Training Objectives:

  1. Build capacity for and support a team of health care workers to develop technical skills and to conduct similar trainings in their health regions/countries;
  2. conduct a training of trainers’ program that ensures in-country capacity for sustainability;
  3. adapt existing training materials to the country context to support future trainings;
  4. start discussions for a long-term Adolescent Health training program in Belize and other countries
