Washington, D.C., 1 July 2013 (PAHO/WHO) — The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), together with the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (AHPSR) of the World Health Organization (WHO), invites applications for grants to support research on how to improve the implementation of health programs in the Americas.

The research grants range from US$30,000 to US$35,000. The application deadline is July 31.

This initiative seeks to facilitate improvements in health program implementation by generating knowledge through research that is embedded within existing activities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The grants are intended for individuals responsible for program implementation in public institutions, such as district health officers and program managers, who wish to improve the efficiency of their programs, incorporate research into those programs, learn more about implementation, and facilitate decision making based on empirical evidence. Rather than funding conventional types of research, the grants are intended to support the embedding of research within existing implementation processes and program activities.

Grant funds may be used to cover the costs of researchers' time or data collection activities (they may not be used to pay for additional staff within the program).

The program has two components:

1)    Grants (USD 30,000-35,000) to support research on program implementation and overcoming implementation barriers.

2)    Training provided by PAHO/WHO and AHPSR in identifying implementation barriers and on the application of methodological research approaches to understand and overcome these barriers.

The program is organized by PAHO's Department of Knowledge Management, Bioethics and Research. Questions can be directed to Ludovic Reveiz (reveizl@paho.org).
