Advancing on Economics for the Prevention and Control of NCDs in the Americas

ADVANCING 3On 31st August and 1st September, the Pan American Health Organization hosted the meeting "Advancing Economics for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in the Americas", in which technical experts from the academia, governments and intergovernmental organizations participated.

This meeting is part of the commitment of the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health carries out to support PAHO Member States efforts´to implement the WHO and PAHO Action Plans for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases through fostering the development and dissemination of innovative and policy-focused evidence on economics of NCDs.

The specific objectives were to:

  • Present state of the art policy-focused evidence on different thematic areas of economics of NCDs
  • Present an overview of the evidence on economics of NCDs available in the Americas and identify research gaps with the aim of fostering implementation of NCD prevention and control policies
  • Suggest new evaluation frameworks as to contribute to enhancing and expanding use of economic tools and methods that are applicable and feasible in the Region beyond traditional public health uptake of economics, with the aim of effectively advocating for NCD prevention and control policies both within and beyond the health sector
