The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Organization of American States (OAS) are sponsoring the first virtual course on the Right to Health and Parliamentary Activity in Latin America, which seeks to expand knowledge of and exchange information about health policy development, debate, and decision-making processes in Latin America.
The course will be offered from April 18 through June 7, 2013. It covers processes and tools that can be used to develop health policies and legislation in Latin America and is designed for regional and national parliamentarians and parliamentary advisers, representatives of nongovernmental organizations, and experts interested in legislative developments related to health policy.
The 60-hour course will explore subjects including the role of the Inter-American system in health, the international context of the right to health and its implementation at the national level, universal health coverage, the Millennium Development Goals, and the importance of civic participation in legislative processes, among other issues.
The course is being offered in Spanish (only) through the Virtual Campus for Public Health. It was developed by PAHO/WHO, in coordination with the OAS, as part of PAHO/WHO's work promoting health systems based on primary health care and as part of PAHO/WHO's collaboration with the Reference System for Parliamentary Activity (SRAP).
SRAP activities include the final approval of technical collaboration agreements with regional and national parliamentary organizations and exchange of information on legislative processes related to health policy.
The OAS's Department of Sustainable Democracy and Special Missions also contributed to the development of the virtual course.
