New York, 22 September 2013 (PAHO/WHO) ? During a special event held in parallel with the 68th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne, participated in a dialogue with representatives of civil society, governments, and other U.N. agencies on regional recommendations for the post-2015 international development agenda.

Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, Director Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Karen Sealey, PAHO special advisor for U.N. matters and partnerships; and Irene Klinger, director of PAHO's External Relations, Partnerships and Governing Bodies department.

The discussions were led by General Assembly President John Ashe of Antigua and Barbuda and moderated by Alicia Bárcena, executive director of the U.N. Economic Commission on Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Representatives of regional civil society networks presented key recommendations developed as part of a months-long international consultative process. They called for an end to social and economic inequities, greater equality between women and men, deeper multilateralism, and ensuring a central place for human rights in the post-2015 development agenda, among other recommendations.

The recommendations will be presented to the international community on Sept. 25 at a special event on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) during the U.N. General Assembly. The event will bring together heads of state and government to take stock of progress on the MDGs, to renew commitments to achieving them, and to advance toward a coherent, integrated sustainable development agenda for the post-2015 period.

The Sept. 22 event, "Advancing Regional Recommendations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda," was organized by the U.N. Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) in collaboration with the Post-2015 Development Planning Team of the Executive Office of the U.N. Secretary-General.

Other PAHO participants included Irene Klinger, director of PAHO's External Relations, Partnerships and Governing Bodies department; and Karen Sealey, PAHO special advisor for U.N. matters and partnerships.

The MDGs are eight development goals that U.N. Member States are committed to achieving by the year 2015. They grew out of the Millennium Declaration, signed in 2000 by world leaders, which called for global and national efforts to reduce extreme poverty and hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women. The MDGs include specific targets to be achieved by 2015, as well as indicators for measuring progress made since 1990. Several of the MDGs are directly related to health.
