Facility will strengthen laboratory and field capacity, as part of a hemispheric eradication program (PHEFA)
Rio de Janeiro, 18 September 2014 (PANAFTOSA/PAHO) — The Pan American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center (PANAFTOSA) has started the activities of its reference laboratory in new high security facilities that will carry out diagnosis and research on the foot-and-mouth virus, in accordance with international biosafety standards.

It is the first reference laboratory of foot-and-mouth disease and vesicular stomatitis of South America recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The premise is located in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil and meets the highest standards of biosafety of OIE and FAO.
