On 20-21 August, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, will make an official visit to Uruguay, where she will participate in events to discuss critical health issues and consolidate PAHO efforts to improve primary health care (PHC) throughout the Hemisphere.Washington, D.C., 19 August 2009 (PAHO) - On 20-21 August, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, will make an official visit to Uruguay, where she will participate in events to discuss critical health issues and consolidate PAHO efforts to improve primary health care (PHC) throughout the Hemisphere.
Her agenda includes interviews with Vice-President Rodolfo Nin Novoa, as well as with the Minister of Public Health, Dr. María Julia Muñoz, and the Minister of Tourism and Health, Dr. Héctor Lescano.
On Thursday August 20, Dr. Roses Periago will preside over the launch of the First Course on Continuing Professional Development for the First-Level Care Team, which will involve 3,000 health professionals. The event will be held in the Ministry of Public Health.
During her visit, PAHO will also sign a cooperation agreement with the MERCOSUR Parliament to coordinate public health activities at the regional level. Dr. Roses Periago will also meet with the staff of the Representative Office of PAHO/WHO in that country.
In Montevideo, Dr. Roses Periago will receive two honors: a degree honoris causa from the University of the Republic Medical School, and recognition from the Legislature's House of Representatives for her leadership in defending the health of the peoples of the Americas.
PAHO, founded in 1902, works with all the countries of the Americas to improve the health and quality of life of their peoples. It also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO).
