Washington, D.C., 2 April 2015 (PAHO/WHO) — "Don Francisco," one of the best-known hosts of Spanish-language television, visited the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) today to offer his continued support of the organization as a Champion of Health of the Americas.

Don Francisco, known off stage as Mario Kreutzberger, was named a PAHO/WHO champion of health in 2005 and in that capacity has filmed a series of public service announcements promoting health messages to viewers throughout the Americas. In a meeting today with PAHO/WHO Director Carissa F. Etienne, he said he looks forward to collaborating in future efforts of this kind.

One of Kreutzberger's chief concerns in health is diabetes. He was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 14 years ago and has been fighting the disease both personally and publicly by practicing and promoting active living and healthy eating.

"We have to be aware that to prevent or control diabetes, you need to be active every day and make sure the food you eat is good for you," said Kreutzberger. Behavior change toward healthier lifestyles as well as laws and regulations to make the healthy choice the easy choice are "challenges faced by everyone in the world," he added.

Kreutzberger has been helping PAHO/WHO disseminate health messages to Spanish-speaking audiences since 2002 on topics including immunization, blood donation, healthy aging, active living, and nutrition.
