Bridgetown, Barbados, 29 June 2023 (PAHO/WHO) - A national strategic plan for Health Promotion is being developed by St. Vincent and the Grenadines following a PAHO/WHO supported assessment.

During June 20-23, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment in collaboration with PAHO/WHO assessed the Ministry’s Health Promotion Unit (HPU) to enhance its operations.

The objectives of the assessment were: to reflect on the concept and actions of Health Promotion, within the frameworks of the National Health Policy and the SDGs 2019-2030; to explore how best to plan and evaluate the work being done in Health Promotion; and to provide technical advice for the development of a national strategy and/or plan of action for Health Promotion and for the improvement of the Health Promotion Unit.

An overview was given of regional milestones in health promotion. During the workshop, HPU staff were invited to examine ‘What are we strong in’, ‘What our current work looks like’, and ‘What our ideal work looks like’.

Reinforcing health promotion concepts and the role of the HPU in contributing to the priorities of the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment, was also discussed.

Following the presentations and discussions, recommendations were made and compiled, as this input will assist in the development of the National Health Policy and strategic plan for Health Promotion.

PAHO/WHO will continue to work with the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment, as the Ministry’s determines outcomes, actions, responsibilities, timelines and key performance indicators.
