International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2014

Each year, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed on 25 November, followed by 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, ending on 10 December (Human Rights Day). This year, PAHO will participate in a number of events leading up to and during this important period of action and awareness:

18 November - Responding to intimate partner and sexual violence against women: WHO guidelines and tools

The first event is a webinar that will be held on Tuesday, 18 November, one week before International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. To access the webinar beginning at 10:00 a.m. (EST)

2 December - Violence against women and sexual and reproductive rights in the Americas: Progress and persistent challenges

Please join PAHO and our partners, the Commission on the Status of Women/OAS and the Permanent Observer Mission of France to the OAS, for this event which will be held on Tuesday, 2 December from 2:50 — 5:30 p.m. in the OAS building, Ruben Dario Room. This round-table discussion seeks to explore the current status of sexual and reproductive rights in the Americas and identify priorities and strategies for strengthening legislation, norms and public policies on this issue in the context of violence against women. 3 December - US launch of The Lancet edition dedicated to Violence against Women and Girls

The Global Women's Institute at the George Washington University (GWI), in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the World Health Organization (WHO) invite you to this event, which will take place on Wednesday, 3 December 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the GW Jack Morton Auditorium. The special edition is focused on the elimination of violence against women and girls, and includes five papers which cover the evidence base in prevention, the health sector response, the role of men and women in successful prevention efforts, practical lessons from experience on the ground, and call for specific actions to eliminate violence against women and girls. 4 December - Setting the Stage: Asking Women about Violence and Responding Within Health Settings

This event is a collaboration between PAHO, USAID, Population Reference Bureau and Care International. It will be held on Thursday, 4 December from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Care International building on 1825 I Street NW, Washington, DC.
