Nearly one in four people in Latin America and the Caribbean are between the ages of 10 and 24. While the Region has made important advances in health, education, and social development, many young people still face barriers that limit their opportunities to thrive.
From mental health challenges and violence to unequal access to quality health services, climate-related risks, misinformation, and persistent social inequalities, adolescents and youth continue to navigate complex realities. These challenges often have a greater impact on Indigenous, Afro-descendant, migrant, rural, and other vulnerable populations.
Yet young people across the Americas are also leading change. They are innovators, advocates, and community leaders who are shaping healthier, more equitable, and more resilient societies.
International Youth Day 2026 is an opportunity to celebrate their contributions and renew our collective commitment to ensuring that every young person can enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical, mental, and social well-being.
Why It Matters
- Health and well-being are essential for young people to reach their full potential.
- Every adolescent and young person deserves equitable access to quality, youth-responsive health services.
- Meaningful youth participation is critical for building healthier communities and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Investing in youth health today creates lifelong benefits for individuals, communities, and societies.
Call to Action
This year, PAHO is calling on governments, health professionals, educators, civil society, development partners, communities, and young people themselves to take action by:
- Promoting youth health and well-being.
- Supporting meaningful youth participation in decision-making.
- Investing in equitable and accessible health services.
- Addressing the social and environmental factors that affect young people's health.
- Recognizing and amplifying youth leadership across the Region.
Together, we can create a future where all adolescents and young people are healthy, safe, empowered, and able to thrive.
Join us in celebrating International Youth Day 2026 and championing the health, well-being, and leadership of young people across the Americas.
