2010 Situation Analysis: Elimination of Mother-to-child Transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis

In September 2010, PAHO Member States approved the Strategy and Plan of Action for the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis by Resolution 50/15 at the 50th Directing Council Meeting8 aimed at: a)reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV to 2% or less, b) reducing the incidence of pediatric HIV cases to 0.3 or less per 1,000 live births, and c) reducing the incidence of congenital syphilis to 0.5 casesi or less per 1,000 births by 2015.This report describes the current status of progress in the Region towards the Elimination Initiative goals, highlights gaps and challenges, and presents recommendations for future action to achieve these goals.
