The strategy and plan of action provides strategic and technical guidance to Member States of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on strengthening health systems to address sepsis through a wide range of interventions. These begin with prevention, including immunizations, infection prevention and control (IPC), and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives, and continue with access to quality health care services, timely diagnosis, and effective clinical management of sepsis. This document also focuses on addressing inequities in health care and the needs of specific populations such as neonates, children, and women.

The approach is multifaceted, relying on enhanced surveillance systems, ongoing research to inform practice, and widespread awareness campaigns to educate both health care professionals and the public about sepsis prevention and management. This holistic approach is designed to reduce the incidence and impact of sepsis, improving outcomes for patients across all demographics. The strategy and plan of action is to be implemented over a five-year time frame (2025–2029).
