Oropouche virus research agenda. January 2025. Development of a research agenda for the characterization of Oropouche virus and its public health implications

As Oropouche virus disease reemerges and expands, the need for evidence-based public health guidance has never been more urgent. This report outlines key research priorities essential for limiting the impact of the outbreak, identified through a consensus-driven process led by regional experts and the Pan American Health Organization. Focusing on five critical areas – vertical transmission, vectors and reservoirs, epidemiology and surveillance, laboratory advancements, and clinical aspects – this research agenda highlights urgent gaps and strategic actions. From investigating pregnancy-related complications and viral persistence to improving diagnostic tools and surveillance, this report provides a road map for strengthening global, regional, and national responses. With a call for coordinated cross-sectoral collaboration, this publication is a vital resource for researchers, health authorities, and policymakers committed to combating Oropouche virus disease and safeguarding public health.
