Smart Hospitals Toolkit. Second edition

Cover

The Smart Hospitals Toolkit is a practical, user-friendly package created by the Pan American Health Organization to help healthcare facilities become safer, greener, and better maintained. As part of the Smart Hospitals Initiative, it responds to climate change through adaptation and mitigation measures: improving structural safety, operational performance, and environmental sustainability in hospitals and health centres. Designed for hospital administrators, disaster managers, engineers, designers, and maintenance teams, the Toolkit helps facilities evaluate disaster risks, energy use, and environmental impacts. It provides clear action plans to improve resilience and efficiency, integrating tools such as the Hospital Safety Index, the Green Checklist, and baseline assessment instruments. These tools link safety upgrades with sustainable practices, ensuring cost-effective improvements. A central goal of the initiative is to reduce vulnerability to natural hazards and adapt to climate change. Many hospitals in the Americas face risks from hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, heat waves, and other extreme events. The Toolkit supports disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery through a multi-hazard approach, helping facilities remain operational during emergencies. In addition, the Toolkit promotes smarter resource management and mitigation of climate change by encouraging renewable energy use, water conservation, and waste reduction. It highlights practical solutions such as solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, and efficient building design. By combining safety and sustainability, the Smart Hospitals Toolkit not only protects lives during crises but also reduces long-term operational costs. Ultimately, it contributes to stronger, more resilient health systems that can continue delivering essential care under all conditions.
