Introduction

The Region of the Americas is experiencing a significant resurgence of measles. As of Epidemiological Week 20 of 2026, 20,521 confirmed cases and 25 deaths have been reported, representing a four-fold increase compared with the same period in 2025.

In this context, mass gatherings and cross-border travel can amplify transmission, particularly among populations with suboptimal vaccination coverage. Strengthening active case finding, early identification and treatment of severe cases, implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, and timely management of complications are critical to interrupt transmission, reduce mortality, and prevent long-term sequelae.

Objective

To strengthen capacities for clinical management and infection prevention and control in countries experiencing measles outbreaks and enhance preparedness in countries without ongoing outbreaks.

Target Audience

Public health authorities, clinicians, pediatricians, infectious disease specialists, infection prevention and control professionals, epidemiologists, emergency response teams, and other healthcare professionals involved in measles preparedness and response.
