Context

 

Early detection, timely treatment, and prevention among contacts are essential components of progress towards leprosy elimination. PAHO/WHO recommends contact screening accompanied, where appropriate, by post-exposure prophylaxis with single-dose rifampicin (SDR-PEP). This webinar will provide a regional forum to introduce the approach, review its rationale, and facilitate its programmatic implementation in countries of the Americas.

General Objective

 

To strengthen knowledge among health professionals in the Region of the Americas on the use of single-dose rifampicin as a preventive intervention for eligible contacts of persons affected by leprosy.

Specific Objectives

 

- Provide context on the leprosy situation and elimination priorities in the Region of the Americas.

- Present WHO recommendations on contact screening and SDR-PEP.

- Review the operational considerations, tools, and conditions required for implementation.

- Foster the exchange of questions and experiences among professionals across the Region.

Target Audience

 

Health professionals in the Region of the Americas involved or interested in leprosy prevention and elimination, including programme managers, clinical teams, public health professionals, surveillance and primary health care personnel, partners, and other relevant stakeholders.
