On 20 August 2026, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (Instituto Geofísico del Perú, IGP) reported a magnitude 7.2 earthquake with an epicenter north of Coracora, Parinacochas province, Ayacucho region, at a depth of 108 km. According to the National Emergency Operations Center (Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia Nacional, COEN), the earthquake was strongly felt in Parinacochas province and Nasca (Ica), and moderately felt in Ica and Pisco. The Peruvian Navy ruled out a tsunami threat. At the time of reporting, no fatalities, injuries, or severe structural damage had been confirmed. Authorities reported the potential for rockfalls affecting roads, and a multisectoral commission was deployed to assess possible damage to adobe housing north of Coracora.
