On 24 August 2026, Colombian media reported an updated consolidated assessment from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (Unidad Nacional para la Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres, UNGRD) following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake of 10 August, with an epicentre near San José del Palmar, Chocó department. According to the report, 329 people died, 4,592 were injured, and 234 remain missing. More than 400 municipalities have been affected, and approximately 210,000 people have been left without housing. The UNGRD also announced a standardized methodology for assessing earthquake-affected buildings, using rapid and detailed inspections to classify structures with green, yellow, or red placards according to their safety and habitability. Peru
On 23 August 2026, Peruvian media reported that the Government declared a state of emergency in five districts affected by the magnitude 7.2 earthquake of 20 August in Ayacucho. The measure, established through Supreme Decree No. 119-2026-PCM and published in the official gazette El Peruano, covers the districts of Chumpi, Coracora, Pullo, and Upahuacho in Parinacochas province, and Carapo in Huanca Sancos province. The declaration enables exceptional response and rehabilitation measures under the technical coordination of the National Institute of Civil Defence (Instituto Nacional de Defensa Civil, INDECI), with the participation of the Regional Government of Ayacucho and relevant national ministries. Preliminary assessments in Parinacochas province identified 498 affected dwellings, including 83 damaged, six uninhabitable, and one destroyed, as well as 21 affected educational institutions and 26 health facilities. On 24 August 2026, media reported heavy rainfall and flooding in Caracas and two additional states associated with the passage of tropical wave number 40. According to the report, at least six people were reported missing and more than 150 dwellings were affected following the overflow of streams and widespread flooding. In Guaicaipuro, at least 156 dwellings were affected, including structures with collapsed walls or masonry damage, while two houses were destroyed in the El Prado sector.
