Natural Hazards Monitoring - 28 September 2026

OFFICIAL

United States – Severe Weather
On 28 September 2026, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reported that a strong nor’easter brought coastal flooding, rip currents, strong winds, and heavy rainfall to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast over the weekend. New Jersey and New York declared states of emergency on 25 September. In New Jersey, requests for high-water rescue vehicles were reported in Hudson and Cape May counties, while transportation and mass transit disruptions persisted in both states. Flooding and downed trees resulted in multiple road closures, and federal resources remained available to support damage assessments and recovery efforts. Additionally, media reports indicated that at least one person died, hundreds of flights were canceled, and more than 100,000 customers were left without electricity on Sunday morning across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
