On 6 May 2026, the Government of the state of Maranhão reported that 18 municipalities declared a state of emergency due to heavy rainfall. Response operations carried out by the Maranhão State Military Fire Department (CBMMA) and State Civil Defense include damage assessments, monitoring activities, evacuation of families from risk areas, and humanitarian assistance. Authorities also reported flooding and damages in urban and residential areas in Santa Rita and inspections and humanitarian assistance activities in Rosário. The declaration of a State of Emergency enables access to federal resources for humanitarian assistance and recovery activities.
