On 8 September 2026, the United States National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that 64 large fires were being managed, with 15,855 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide. More than 3.6 million acres were burning in active fires, and the 2026 year-to-date total reached 53,233 fires and 8.3 million acres burned. The national preparedness level remained at 4 (out of 5). Significant ongoing incidents included the Ross Fire in Texas, which had burned approximately 90,400 acres and was 44% contained, as well as active large fires in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, California, and other states. Earlier reports during the same week indicated that thousands of people had been evacuated due to wildfires across the western United States. Information is available from: NIFC.
