One of PAHO's Public Health Heroes Killed in Haiti

Washington, DC, 12 January 2010 (PAHO/WHO) - Dr. Zilda Arns Neumann, a Brazilian pediatrician who was honored by the Pan American Health Organization in 2002 as a Public Health Hero, is one of the victims of the devastating earthquake that rocked Haiti.

Dr. Zilda Arns Neumann—also winner of PAHO's Award for Administration in 1994—was founder and director of the Pastoral da Criança, the organ for social action of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil.

Dr. Arns arrived in Haiti the day before the earthquake for a religious meeting.
