AI-GUARD Tool. Governance & Use Assessment for Responsible Deployment

The AI-GUARD Tool (Artificial Intelligence Governance & Use Assessment for Responsible Deployment) is a framework developed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to support the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in the health sector. Through a structured, tiered approach, it enables organizations to assess the strategic value, risks, institutional governance, human oversight mechanisms, and bias mitigation measures associated with AI initiatives before implementation. The tool helps ministries of health, public health agencies, hospitals, and other institutions make informed, transparent, and evidence-based decisions, promoting the safe, ethical, and sustainable use of artificial intelligence to improve public health outcomes.
