In 2019, the 57th Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) approved a policy for an integrated sustainable approach to communicable diseases in the Americas (1–3), known as the Elimination Initiative (EI). The EI promotes a life-course, person-centered approach with four dimensions: interrupting endemic transmission, ending mortality, ending morbidity, and preventing disability.
