Empowering Families to Face Domestic Violence (2009)

The goal of this publication is to report the Laboratory of Violence Analysis & Prevention (LAPREV) of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos in fi ghting and preventing domestic violence in the city of São Carlos, a mid-size city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Approximately 30% of women living in Brazilian cities have experienced physical and sexual violence by an intimate partner, and this result is increased for women residing in rural areas. In terms of victimization, battered women between 20-59 years of age comprise the most frequent external cases seen by the Brazilian Public Health system.
