Laboratory diagnostic algorithm for the detection of suspected cases of influenza A/H5

This diagnostic algorithm for the detection of suspected cases of influenza A/H5 virus infection is designed as a standardized operational guide that strengthens early detection, molecular confirmation, and international notification of events of public health significance. Its application complies with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) and the guidelines of the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), promoting technical coordination between national laboratories and global networks.

Upon detection of influenza A/H5, the NIC must notify PAHO/WHO within 24 hours and send the sample to the WHO Collaborating Center (CDC) for confirmation, antigenic characterization, and genomic analysis. This operational flow ensures integration between national, regional, and global levels of surveillance, guaranteeing a timely and evidence-based response to viruses with zoonotic or pandemic potential. For more information: laboratoryresponse@paho.org
