Context
This virtual session is dedicated to commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, adopted in November 1986 at the First International Conference on Health Promotion, held in that Canadian city. The document marked a milestone in global public health and transformed the way health is understood, recognizing that it is created in the context of everyday life and is profoundly influenced by social, economic, environmental, cultural and political factors.
Topics
The Charter consolidated principles that continue to guide health promotion around the world, including equity, social participation, intersectoral action, the creation of supportive environments, and the strengthening of the capacity of individuals and communities to act on the determinants of their health. Over the past four decades, its influence has been reflected in public policies, national strategies, community movements, academic programs, and mechanisms of international cooperation.
Forty years after its adoption, this commemoration offers an opportunity to recognize the historical and political significance of the Ottawa Charter and to reflect on the continued relevance of its principles in the face of contemporary challenges. The dialogue will provide an opportunity to explore its legacy for health promotion, the lessons learned over these four decades, and its relevance for continuing to advance equity, well-being, and sustainable development in the Americas and around the world.
Objetives
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Ottawa Charter by highlighting its historical, political and conceptual legacy, as well as its contribution to strengthening health promotion, equity and sustainable development in the Americas and around the world.
