On Wednesday, 10 July,  2019, join us in a new session of the Alcohol and Health Webinar Series, titled  "Barriers to alcohol policy implementation and what to do about it"

In this webinar we will consider two inter-related questions: Who makes alcohol policy? And what are the barriers to the implementation of effective policies?  The answers to these questions are not simple and they differ across countries and between different levels of government within countries.

The session will be only in English

Overview

The goal of this webinar is to describe the major players in policymaking process at the local, national and international levels, giving special attention to  government institutions, international health agencies, such as the World Health Organization, public interest groups, particularly nongovernmental organizations, and commercial interests like the alcoholic beverage industry.  With the growth and concentration of the alcohol industry, there is now a growing need to understand its strategies and tactics, and to develop better methods to advocate for evidence-based policies, which will be described.

Presenter

Dr Thomas Babor, Professor in the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care, University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Dr Barbor received his doctoral degree in social psychology from the University of Arizona, spent several years in postdoctoral research training in social psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and subsequently received a master of public health degree in psychiatric epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. His research interests include screening, diagnosis, early intervention, and treatment evaluation, as well as alcohol, drug and gambling policy.
