Paramaribo, Suriname - 12 October 2026 – The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Country Office in Suriname, together with national health partners, has completed the final module of the Safe Transport for Emergency Health Operations training programme. The programme is designed to strengthen the capacity of drivers and transport personnel who support health services and emergency response operations across the country.

The programme equips participants with practical skills in defensive driving, risk awareness, safe transport procedures and emergency response. The final module focused on transporting vaccines, laboratory specimens, chemicals and other critical health supplies needed during disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.
Participants received training in cold chain management, infection prevention and control, specimen transport, chemical safety and roadside incident response. The sessions combined technical presentations with practical demonstrations and scenario-based exercises.

Safe and reliable transport is essential to emergency health operations. Drivers help ensure that vaccines, laboratory specimens, medical supplies and other sensitive materials reach their destinations safely and on time, supporting continuity of health services and public health response efforts.
The training is supported through the Pandemic Fund’s Public Health Workforce Development initiative and contributes to strengthening emergency preparedness and resilience in Suriname’s health sector.
