Nassau, The Bahamas, 22 October 2026 (PAHO/WHO) — The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) announces the appointment of Mr. Ian A. Stein as its Representative in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the United Kingdom Overseas Territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands. He succeeds Dr. Eldonna V. Boisson, who served in the role from February 2021 to October 2026 and has been reassigned as PAHO/WHO Representative for Jamaica, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.

Mr. Stein assumed the position effective 22 October 2026. He has served with PAHO/WHO since 2004 and brings more than 30 years of national and international public health experience to the assignment.

A seasoned international public health executive, Mr. Stein has led PAHO/WHO country and multi-country operations and has provided strategic, technical, and diplomatic guidance to governments and partners. Since 2021, he has served as PAHO/WHO Representative for Jamaica, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, leading technical cooperation, Country Cooperation Strategy implementation, health diplomacy, and efforts to strengthen universal health coverage, health equity, and resilient health systems.

His experience also includes senior leadership in resource mobilization, programme planning, budgeting, and results-based management, as well as major public health emergency responses across the Americas, Africa, and the Caribbean.

Additionally, he has coordinated responses to COVID-19, Ebola, Zika, measles, and climate-related disasters, managed complex emergency operations and multidisciplinary teams, and built partnerships with governments, UN agencies, donors, civil society, and the private sector. This breadth of experience positions him well to advance PAHO/WHO's technical cooperation with The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

We warmly welcome Mr. Stein to this new assignment. His extensive experience in country cooperation, health diplomacy, emergency response, and strategic partnerships will support continued collaboration with national authorities and partners to advance resilient, equitable, and people-centred health systems in The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
